    Labor & Delivery (L&D)

The unit where patients are admitted for active labor, fetal monitoring, and birth. The clinical focus is intrapartum management and safe delivery.

    About This Unit

Labor & Delivery is the inpatient unit responsible for caring for patients during active labor and childbirth. The clinical team supports patients through the stages of labor, performs continuous or intermittent fetal heart rate monitoring, and manages the birth itself — whether vaginal or surgical. L&D units vary widely in size, layout, and acuity capability from one facility to the next. Some operate as standalone labor rooms; others combine labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum (LDRP) in a single room. How a given unit is staffed, how patients are triaged, and how coverage is structured are decisions made by each facility's clinical leadership.

A note on scope: Every hospital structures its Women's & Children's Services differently. Unit design, staffing models, and patient-to-nurse ratios are set by each facility's clinical leadership based on its patient population, acuity, and resources. The descriptions here are a general overview — not a prescription for how any unit should operate.
