OB Emergency Department (OB ED)
A dedicated emergency or triage area for obstetric patients presenting with urgent concerns, often located within or adjacent to L&D.
About This Unit
An OB Emergency Department (sometimes called OB Triage or OB ED) is a specialized area that evaluates pregnant patients who arrive with urgent obstetric concerns. This can include labor evaluation, bleeding, decreased fetal movement, trauma in pregnancy, or other acute symptoms. The unit provides rapid assessment, stabilization, and a decision point — whether the patient is admitted to L&D, the antepartum unit, or discharged with follow-up. Not every hospital operates a standalone OB ED; some integrate this function directly into the L&D triage process. The scope, hours of operation, and staffing approach vary by facility.

A note on scope: Every hospital structures its Women's & Children's Services differently. Unit design, staffing models, and patient-to-nurse ratios are set by each facility's clinical leadership based on its patient population, acuity, and resources. The descriptions here are a general overview — not a prescription for how any unit should operate.
