    Postpartum / Mother-Baby Unit

The unit where patients recover after delivery while bonding with and caring for their newborn, often using a couplet care model.

    About This Unit

The Postpartum or Mother-Baby unit supports patients in the hours and days following birth. Many facilities use a couplet care model, where one nurse cares for both the mother and newborn together, while others separate postpartum recovery and newborn nursery care into distinct teams. The focus is on maternal recovery, pain management, newborn feeding and assessment, lactation support, and education for discharge. The length of stay, room setup, and care model are determined by each facility.

The descriptions here are a general overview — not a prescription for how any unit should operate.
