    Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

A specialized unit providing intensive or special care for newborns who are premature, critically ill, or require advanced support.

    About This Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for newborns who need a higher level of support than a well newborn nursery can provide. This includes premature infants, newborns with respiratory or other medical complications, and those requiring advanced monitoring or treatment. NICUs are designated by level — from Level I (well newborn care) through Level IV (the highest level of regional neonatal intensive care). The level of care a facility offers, the unit's design, and the clinical capabilities are determined by each organization and its regional role. Staffing models and patient assignments are set by facility leadership.

A note on scope: Every hospital structures its Women's & Children's Services differently. Unit design, staffing models, and patient-to-nurse ratios are set by each facility's clinical leadership based on its patient population, acuity, and resources. The descriptions here are a general overview — not a prescription for how any unit should operate.
